SIBU: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg says the Barisan Nasional (BN) government wants to transform Sibu again.

Speaking during the Harmony Night event at Sibu Gateway last night, he said this could only be realised if there was cooperation between Sibu folk and the government.

He pointed out that the town had been developed since the time of the late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai and when the late Datuk Robert Lau took over as Member of Parliament, he transformed Sibu.

“Sibu has changed since then.  Where can we get the largest central market except in Sibu?” he queried the large crowd in attendance.

Abang Johari said when he was Minister of Housing and Urbanisation, he transformed Sibu Jaya into what is now a modern and vibrant township.

“Therefore, we want to transform Sibu again, but we must have cooperation between Sibu (folk) and the government,” he said, adding the current government is still a Barisan Nasional government which will govern the state for another three years.

He also expressed his hope that the BN could wrest the Sibu parliamentary seat from the opposition in the coming general election, and for Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and United People’s Party (UPP) to be united for the sake of Sarawak’s future.

“We need to have the common melody and the same tune to be able to work together. That is why we need to be united,” he said.

Also present at the event were Abang Johari’s wife Datin Patinggi Dato Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and wife Datin Sri Pauline Leong, and Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.
